SUMMARY:PRIMITIVE to MODERN FIRE WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:HANDS-ON FIRE-MAKING WORKSHOP   —  August 15\, 10 a.m. \n  \n \nFIRE!   Yes\, it can be dangerous\, and yet\, it can save your life.  Uncontrolled\, fire can be devastating.  Yet\, once you learn how to make and control fire\, it’s possibly one of your most important survival skills since you use fire to stay warm\, to purify water\, to cook food\, to signal\, to make tools\, etc. etc. \nLearn how to make fire by several primitive methods.  You will learn the 4 Principles by which fire is generated: friction\, the sun\, chemicals\, and electricity.  You will practice several of these\, and learn the best techniques for mastery. \n \nYou will use reflectors and magnifying glasses\, batteries\, flint and steel\, the bow\, the hand drill\, the piston\, magnesium and others. \nYou will learn by doing. You goal will be to create an ember\, and “mother” it to a flame.  You will learn which woods are best\, and how to process your woods. \nA short walk will be included to see which plants are best for your fire-making kit. \n \nThis class applies to our Bushcraft Certificate. \nLocation 2. Details sent with registration. \nCopies of our books are available at all classes. \n

SUMMARY:GOURD WORKSHOP\, mid-day
DESCRIPTION:mid-day   GOURD WORKSHOP \nThursday\, August 20\, noon. \n \n \nHere’s another ancient skill that you’ll enjoy learning.  Botanists know that the “ornamental gourds” came out of Africa\, and somehow made it to the American south\, and spread to the Southwest.  How they got to the Americas is a matter of debate — some say they simply floated\, but it’s very likely that they simply came on one of the many boats from Africa that came to the Americas in the pre-Columbian era. \nYou will get to choose a gourd\, and learn all the steps necessary to clean\, cut\, sand\, and create a funtional product. \nEach person will work on turning an ornamental gourd into a bowl for eating\, or perhaps a canteen\, ladle\, or plate. \nThere are several skill sets involved\, and we’ll talk you through them so you’ll understand the mechanics of making a gourd that you’ll be happy to use. \n  \n  \n  \n \nWe’ll bring tools\, but if you have a good knife\, hacksaw\, fine files\, bring them!  Not a highly-complicated craft\, but requires patience.  You will select a gourd that we bring\, and clean it\, decide where to cut it — no two gourds are alike  — and then clean the inside and smooth the sharp edges. You’ll end up with a new skill and a bowl or dish that you can use right away. \nYou’ll also get to take seeds home so you can grow your own if you have the space. \n \n$45.   [$30 for seniors/students]    RSVP for this one so we bring enough gourds!   Location given after you register. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:WILD FOODS: TRADITIONAL ACORN PROCESSING WORKSHOP --
DESCRIPTION:PROCESSING WILD ACORNS — FROM RAW ACORN TO DELICIOUS PANCAKES!   SEPTEMBER 12\, 10 a.m. \n \n \n  \nSaturday\, September 12\, 10 a.m.  \n$65  ($45 for students and seniors) \nTRADITIONAL ACORN PROCESSING\n \nThis Session is a complete lesson on the historical value of the ACORN in west coast native societies\, along with some nutritional information. You will then go through the entire process of turning the raw acorn into a delicious food. You’ll shell\, grind\, leach\, test\, leach some more\,  and blend with a few other ingredients to make acorn food products. \nIf you didn’t already know this\, ACORNS are a Super-Food\, not simply squirrel food.  They contain all the amino acids!  Native Americans of the Americas understood this and regularly processed and consumed acorn products. In fact\, acorns have been used for food by many cultures the world over.  They are still commonly used in Korean dishes. In the U.S.\, the use of the acorn is experiencing a revival. \nWe will also prepare a few other wild food dishes\, depending on what is in season.  \nThere will be minimal walking today\,  but still bring your field notebook. \nThis can apply to an Ethno-botany certificate. \nLocation sent upon registration. \nPricing: $65 per class.   (Seniors/ students $45) \n  \n  \nFrancisco offers freshly-made acorn pancakes\n  \n \nBooks by Nyerges available at Classes \n  \n

SUMMARY:FIBRE-CRAFT 101 (including introduction to basketry)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 26\, 10 a.m.  FIBRE-CRAFT 101: \nThe Art of Turning Plant Fibres into Bags\, Baskets\, Nets\, String\, Sandals. \nWe’ve had some requests for a BASKETRY Workshop. This class will include Basketry basics\, though this class will not be only basketry. \nThe art of working fibre is nearly a lost art. You’ll learn to recognize some of the common plants which yield a useful fibre\, and learn how to work them into strings\, and baskets\, and nets\, and sandals\, and more. In the old days of the Southwest\, the lives of the people were literally tied together with fibre: for shelter\, for clothing (hats\, belts\, shoes)\, fishing nets\, bags\, weaponry\, fire-making\, brushes\, looms for fabric. \nIn the past\, most people had a more intimate connection to plant fibres.  There are so many practical applications\, though today someone makes everything we use.  So it’s become a lost art. \nYou will learn how to process a few plant fibres and how to make them into a usable product! \n \nActual networking!\n \n  \nWe will do a short walk (if time) and learn about some of the plants that are useful for weaving\,  and making cordage. \nYou will then learn by making some of the useful products. \nAlong the way\, you’ll also see many of the other useful and edible plants of the area. \nNOTE: PLEASE RSVP SINCE WE NEED TO PLAN TO BRING SUFFICIENT SUPPLIES! \n$65   (Seniors and students $45) \n
