DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 11\, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. \nPlants have many uses\, and this class focuses on their color-producing pigments. From the whole plant\, flowers\, tree bark\, teas\, and even fruits and vegetables\, it’s amazing the variety of colors and shades nature provides for dyeing. For this class\, two colors are explored\, yellow and pink\, made from our local area’s easy-to-find (and identify) plants (plus one common vegetable). \nEthno-botany and ethical harvesting practice is included. \nWe will first take a short\, easy walk to identify plants and their uses\, and particularly\, which ones are color-producing. Understanding the inner-workings of a pin-tumbler lock\, including how to re-key your lock and how to pick your lock are valuable pieces of knowledge while working toward self-reliance. \nOur class will take you through the details of the pin tumbler lock and you will learn how pin tumbler locks are picked open. You will work through the process using locks that are super easy to pick through locks that are very difficult to pick. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 13\, 10 a.m. \nLearning about emergency shelters\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmergency “Man Made” shelters: KNOTS\, TARPS\, and SHELTERS.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an excellent class to learn and practice basic KNOTS\, and TARPS.We will begin with a review of the priorities of survival and how to address each. From there\, we will focus on part of the thermoregulation priority…shelter.\n\nYou will learn various tarp set-up\, the tarp sizes\, various tarp materials and weights\, the various knots to secure your tarp as a shelter\, stake management\, and so much more!The ability to practice the knots is itself an essential and basic skill. When combined with with tarps\, you will be learning some ways to turn that tarp into an emergency shelter. Additionally\, you will learn what is best for colder situations\, for hot situations\, and even the rain. What is the best direction to face your tarp\, and all the details such as tarp knots and stake management\, will all be included.\n\nStudents will set up various tarp configurations and different types of tarps\, from ultralight on up. We will explore the use of light-weight painter tarps for emergency shelters as well asmilitary poncho’s for emergency shelters. You will learn what to do if your tarp has no grommets. Then on to tarps ranging in size from 5×7 to 10×10.
